Boreal is open already with man-made snow. Mammoth, further down south and high up on the southern Sierra crest opened up on Veterans’ Day. But most Sierra ski areas are waiting on mother nature to deliver the goods before they open to the public.

Vail Resorts, the behemoth mountain resort company, has acquired Northstar-at-Tahoe.

This is the second Tahoe-area resort now owned by Vail, in addition to South Lake Tahoe’s Heavenly. The company also owns Beaver Creek, Breckenridge and Keystone

Kirkwood was 100 percent back online today after an unexpected New Year’s Day power outage shut down the resort through Saturday, and kept all but four lifts closed on Sunday.
