This post from National Geographic Adventure Blog is definitely worth a read. Greg Child’s quote at the end sums it all up for me. This, in response to the cadre of critics who continue to lay blame on this person or that person for the disaster:

Child offers a final perspective. “I’m not going to put the boot into
any of those folks. They were on K2 for the same reason I was when I
went. To me, it was the ultimate test of mountaineering. “But something
like this is bound to happen again. What the hell—climbing is
dangerous.”
