Sierra Sub-Alpine Meadow Preserved
The Truckee Donner Land Trust and Trust for Public Land have teamed up to purchase and preserve a 990-acre sub-alpine meadow on the Little Truckee River – saving it from the hands of developers who had been eyeing the spot.
From the Sierra Sun:
Standing on a bluff overlooking Perazzo Meadows Tuesday, Perry Norris surveyed his group’s most recent conservation win.
“This
is a prime area of ecological importance for the Sierra Nevada,” said
Norris, executive director of the Truckee Donner Land Trust…“This is of real strategic importance as Truckee approaches buildout,” Norris said.
He
explained that just as when development became restricted in the Tahoe
Basin it spilled into Truckee, as Truckee reaches capacity it could
then spill out into unincorporated Nevada County — into areas like
Perazzo Meadows.“You start getting rural sprawl and the fences go up and nonnative species are introduced,” Norris said.
Also of note is a negotiation under way by the same group to preserve 440 acres near Paradise Valley north of Castle Peak. Castle Peak is one of the most easily-accessible backcountry ski areas in the Tahoe region and is a favorite of countless enthusiasts. This little news nugget was tagged onto the end of the story in the Sierra Sun, but sounds like front-page news to me. Keep up the good work!!
